📌 Margin vs Markup: What is the difference?

Margin (Gross Margin) is your profit divided by your Revenue. If you buy an item for 50 SAR and sell it for 100 SAR, your profit is 50 SAR. Your margin is 50/100 = 50%.

Markup is your profit divided by your Cost. In the same example, your profit is 50 SAR and your cost is 50 SAR. Your markup is 50/50 = 100%.

هامش الربح (Margin): هو الربح مقسوماً على الإيرادات (سعر البيع). إذا اشتريت منتجاً بـ 50 ريالاً وبعته بـ 100 ريال، فربحك 50. الهامش هو 50/100 = 50%.

الترميز (Markup): هو الربح مقسوماً على التكلفة. في نفس المثال، الترميز هو 50/50 = 100%.

What is Gross Profit vs Net Profit? | الفرق بين إجمالي الربح وصافي الربح؟
Gross Profit is what remains after deducting only the direct costs of making the product (Cost of Goods Sold). Net Profit is what remains after deducting ALL business expenses (rent, salaries, marketing, taxes) from the Gross Profit.
إجمالي الربح هو ما يتبقى بعد خصم التكاليف المباشرة للمنتج (تكلفة البضاعة المباعة). صافي الربح هو ما يتبقى بعد خصم جميع النفقات (الإيجار، الرواتب، التسويق، الضرائب) من إجمالي الربح.
What is a good profit margin? | ما هو هامش الربح الجيد؟
A good profit margin varies wildly by industry. A 10% net profit margin is considered average across many industries. 20% is considered high/good, and 5% is low. Retailers often have lower margins but higher volume.

Why can Markup be over 100%, but Margin cannot? | لماذا الترميز يتجاوز 100%؟
Margin is a percentage of Revenue. Since Profit cannot be higher than Revenue, Margin can never exceed 100%. Markup is a percentage of Cost. If you buy something for SAR 10 and sell it for SAR 100, your Profit is SAR 90. Your Markup is 90/10 = 900%.
الهامش هو نسبة من الإيرادات، وبما أن الربح لا يمكن أن يتجاوز الإيرادات، فالهامش لا يتجاوز 100%. أما الترميز فهو نسبة من التكلفة. إذا اشتريت بـ 10 وبعت بـ 100، فربحك 90، والترميز هو 90/10 = 900%.
